This year, America celebrates 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
Two and a half centuries of courage. Sacrifice. Innovation. Growth.
From the Revolution to westward expansion, from defining constitutional moments to leaps in science and technology, the American story has been shaped by events that changed the course of history.

Through every challenge and triumph, powerful symbols emerged to represent the spirit of the nation reminders of resilience, unity, and the pursuit of freedom.
As we approach this historic milestone, many Americans are rediscovering the moments, stories, and symbols that helped shape our nation’s identity.

From 13 Colonies to 50 States
Did you know the first official American flag was adopted on June 14, 1777? It had 13 stars and 13 stripes representing the original colonies. But that wasn’t the first flag flown during the Revolution.
Before the “Betsy Ross” design, colonists used the Grand Union Flag, featuring 13 stripes and the British Union Jack in the corner. It symbolized something powerful:
A people in transition.
Not yet fully separated.
But moving toward independence.
As new states joined the Union, the flag evolved.
1795 – 15 stars
1818 – Stripes returned to 13 permanently
1912 – Standardized star pattern
1959 – 49-star flag
1960 – The 50-star flag we know today
Each version tells a story.
Did You Know?

• In 1789, George Washington was unanimously elected as the first President of the United States.
• Paul Revere’s midnight ride was about 16 miles long, traveling from Boston to Lexington and Concord in April 1775.
• He never actually shouted “The British are coming!”
• The 13 stripes on today’s flag permanently honor the original colonies, no matter how many new states are added.
• In 1869, the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad connected the East and West coasts for the first time, transforming travel, trade, and the growth of the nation.
• When the 50-star flag was adopted in 1960, President Eisenhower received more than 1,500 design submissions from citizens across the country.
History is often more interesting than the myths.

The Gonzales “Come and Take It” flag emerged during the Texas Revolution in 1835, representing defiance and the determination to stand firm.
The Gadsden “Don’t Tread on Me” flag dates back to 1775 and became a Revolutionary-era warning: united, ready, and unwilling to surrender liberty.
